07 Sep Linda’s VHS Run4Kids 5K Race
The VHS Run4Kids 5K Run/Walk is always fun and this year was no exception. (Virtual High School sponsors the annual event and this year was supported by the Optimist Club of Bayfield.) It is ‘a morning of family fun, sport, entertainment, and fundraising–all for a good cause. We had excellent weather conditions (cool like runners prefer) with pre-race grey skies changing to blue with sunshine in time for post-race festivities. Everyone was treated to a well-organized and safe race with tasty gourmet local goodies, face painting, balloon-animals, and yes, coffee. Yeah!
Without prompting my husband decided to sign on to race. Amazingly when we picked up our race kits we were asked what bib numbers we might like. I quickly asked if Bib #1 was available. Yes. (That was easy.) With Bib #2 already taken, Don defaulted to #3. (That was a stroke of luck. Read on.)
I ran the race in 25:27–not my fastest and not my slowest. We both placed 4th in our Age Categories. (Family consistency) Race Prize time was followed by the coveted draw for Door Prizes. The first Bib number pulled out of the jar was #3. Imagine our surprise! Now we have a generous gift certificate to one of the local restaurants. Yeah!
Before the race, my awesome Coach–Rick Mannen–had wished me the best as well as saying ‘always enjoy the journey’. I did that–enjoyed it all and as it turns out, according to him, I ran ‘terrific’. (Thanks Coach. Like that a lot.)
It was heartwarming to hear this year’s Make-A-Wish recipient (wishes to be Prime Minister of Canada) speak to the crowd before the race. I was thrilled to learn that generous donations from people I asked earned ‘my team’ the designation of Top Fundraisers. Yeah Team!
FYI: I am proud to be an online teacher for Virtual High School Ontario.
An event such as this makes me even prouder of my association with everyone at VHS and especially the principal, owner, and CEO Steve Baker.
Thanks for all you do for others.
